During School Programming
Throughout their time at PS19 EVCS, all students participate in special programming facilitated by community partners. These residencies take place during the school day in our school building.
All students in grades 2 & 3 have weekly chess class with coach Shawn. Through regular instruction, students gain confidence, learn focus and determination, and improve their problem-solving skills.
All students in grades 4 & 5 have an 8-week residency of West African dance classes with live musicians and dance instructors from the world famous Alvin Ailey dance company. Our students perform on stage at the end of this program.
Students in 3rd through 5th grade have regular opportunities to hear jazz musicians from Lincoln Center perform in our very own auditorium. This program compliments their learning in weekly music classes and inspires the next generation of musicians.
Students in 3rd grade engage in a 2-month poetry study with professional writers and poets from New York City. This study allows students to express their feelings and noticings through creative writing while also learning a variety of writing techniques.
Students in 3rd grade participate in an 8-week African Drumming residency while 4th and 5th grade students can choose to participate in a weekly Rock Band class as part of our electives program. Our partnership also provides free music lessons to any of our students.
Students in 3K through 1st grade dive into project work with MAPS (music, arts, puppets sound), using a variety of artistic techniques to tell stories, be creative, and connect art to their science and social studies learning. All students also work with other kids from across PS19 EVCS to create school-wide art projects and musical pieces to build community to start the school year
